Peter Johnstone is a prodigiously talented pianist and keyboards player. The winner of the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year title in 2012, he has gone on to international acclaim through his work with the award-winning quartet Square One and with saxophonist Tommy Smith’s ‘Coltrane’ quartet. He also plays in duo with Smith and for the past five years has been the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra keyboard master, featuring alongside top international names including the sensational vocalists Jazzmeia Horn and Kurt Elling.
Peter also leads his own piano trio, plays organ in both the Paul Towndrow Trio and Prime Trio, and has recorded and toured with saxophonist Helena Kay, playing in duo with Kay and expanding Kay’s KIM Trio into a quartet.
In October 2023, Peter toured in the UK with a new group, the Peter Johnstone International Organ Quartet featuring New York-based vibes virtuoso Joe Locke, saxophonist Tommy Smith, drummer Alyn Cosker and Peter himself on organ. During the tour the quartet recorded an album which is due for release early in 2025 and further UK dates are being planned for July 2025.
